  • Important Safety Information Regarding Mounted Riding

At GAIT, participant and horse safety is our top priority. In accordance with PATH Intl. standards, mounted riding may not be appropriate for every rider at every stage.

Mounted riding may be contraindicated if a rider has:

    • Limited ability to hold their head upright or maintain head and neck control

    • Difficulty sitting upright independently or maintaining trunk balance

    • Significant spinal instability, severe scoliosis, or neck or back conditions without medical clearance

    • Severe muscle tone challenges, uncontrolled movements, or motor patterns that impact safety

    • Difficulty safely tolerating a helmet, as helmet use is required for all mounted activities

In some cases, individuals with mild to moderate cerebral palsy and good head, neck, and trunk control may participate in mounted riding with appropriate adaptations. Severe cerebral palsy, especially when head or trunk control is limited, is commonly contraindicated for traditional therapeutic riding under PATH Intl. standards.

If mounted riding is contraindicated, this does not mean a participant is excluded from equine programs or cannot benefit from working with horses. It simply means mounted riding is not safe at this time. Ground-based equine activities, assisted grooming, sensory interaction with horses, or medically supervised hippotherapy may be recommended as safe alternatives.

All riders are evaluated individually. Safety decisions are based on risk, not effort, interest, or desire to participate.

Medical clearance is required when there are neurological concerns, spinal involvement, or limited head and neck control. Clearance must specifically address safety for mounted activities.

Important: Enrollment is not guaranteed until you receive confirmation. Please do not apply for outside funding until your session has been approved.
